Background :
The Gujarat government has approved a ₹2,630 crore project to widen the Ahmedabad–Mehsana highway into an eight-lane corridor, aiming to reduce congestion on one of the state’s busiest road links. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, officials said on Wednesday.
The project will cover a 51.60-km stretch from Adalaj near Ahmedabad to Palavasna Circle in Mehsana. According to the state government, the upgrade will benefit daily commuters and residents across Mehsana, Patan and Banaskantha districts, where traffic has increased sharply over the years.
State government spokesperson and minister Jitu Vaghani said the highway is a vital connection between Ahmedabad and north Gujarat. He added that the expansion will address a long-standing demand from the region and improve overall travel conditions.
The highway was earlier upgraded to four lanes in 1999, with service roads on both sides. However, traffic volumes have grown steadily, with recent surveys showing that more than one lakh vehicles now use the road every day. This has placed heavy pressure on the existing infrastructure.
Under the new plan, the main carriageway will be expanded to eight lanes, along with seven-metre-wide service roads on both sides. The project includes a 6.10-km elevated corridor through Kalol city. This corridor will link existing flyovers and let highway traffic bypass local roads, cutting delays from city traffic.
The project also includes widening all existing bridges and culverts to match the new lane configuration. Eight flyovers and eight underpasses will be built at key locations to improve safety and local connectivity. In addition, a new four-lane railway overbridge will be constructed near Kalol.
Tenders are expected to be issued soon, and the government plans to complete the project within two years. Officials said the highway expansion will cut travel time, save fuel and support economic activity across north Gujarat.
