Background
Gujarat has made a strong push to provide employment opportunities, especially in Ahmedabad, where 119 job fairs organized over the last two years led to more than 20,000 youth securing jobs. Labour and Employment Minister Balvantsinh Rajput told the state Assembly that 20,195 candidates got placements through these fairs.
The government also launched the Anubandham web portal, inaugurated by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, which helps job seekers register from home and enables companies to post job vacancies online. Gujarat operates 46 employment exchanges under the Directorate of Employment and Training, helping people with career guidance, job matching, and job fairs.
The main employers at the fairs were Tata Motors, Zydus Lifesciences Ltd, Unison Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd, and iComet HR India Pvt Ltd. The state also organized special job fairs for marginalized groups. Seven fairs for persons with disabilities helped 278 people find jobs, while two fairs focused on women enabled 784 women to get employed.
The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2023–24 found that Gujarat recorded the lowest unemployment rate in India. It is projected that it will keep decreasing to 1.7% by the year 2025. The rate of labour force participation (LFPR) is 52.9% in general and 78.4% among males, which is one of the highest ones in the country.
Gujarat’s economy continues to rely heavily on manufacturing, which accounts for 45% of total output. Major industries are textiles, automobiles, chemicals, and gems and jewellery that offer numerous employment opportunities.
This initiative is aimed at the broader plans of Gujarat to increase formal employment and generate sustainable growth among the workers within the state.
