Background:
Suzuki Motor Corporation and Suzuki R&D Centre India (SRDI) have launched a new biogas plant in Bhukhala, Banaskantha district, Gujarat. Called the Banas Suzuki Biogas Plant, it can process 100 tonnes of cow dung every day and produce enough biogas to fuel about 850 CNG vehicles daily.
The plant covers 27,000 square metres and is Suzuki’s second biogas facility in India, after the Agthala plant, which started operations in December 2025. The facility will generate compressed biogas (CBG) for vehicles and produce organic fertiliser from the residual cow dung.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat; Shankar Chaudhary, Chairman of Banas Dairy and Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly; and Kenichiro Toyofuku, Managing Officer and Executive General Manager of Biogas Operations at Suzuki.
Biogas is a carbon-neutral fuel that can be used in CNG vehicles. The plant will also create jobs and increase income for local farmers by using cow dung from the area.
This is part of a plan signed in September 2023 between Suzuki, the National Dairy Development Board, and Banas Dairy to set up five biogas plants in India, with two now running in Agthala and Bhukhala.
