Background
The Union Cabinet of India has approved extending the metro corridor from GIFT City to Shahpur to improve public transport connectivity in the region. The new stretch will cover 3.33 kilometres and include three elevated metro stations, according to an official government statement released on Tuesday.
The project will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹1,067.35 crore and is expected to be completed within four years. Once the corridor becomes operational, authorities expect it to handle around 23,702 passengers daily by 2029. Ridership could rise to nearly 58,059 passengers per day by 2041 as the region continues to grow.
The extension aims to strengthen the transport link between Ahmedabad and the rapidly developing financial hub of GIFT City. Officials believe the improved metro network will make commuting easier for people traveling for work, education, and business activities.
Several multinational companies, commercial centres, and educational institutions located along the proposed route are expected to benefit from better connectivity. The government said the metro extension will reduce travel time and make commuting easier.
During construction, the project will create about 1,000 jobs for engineers, construction workers, and other related roles. After the project is finished, around 250 people will work in operations and maintenance. It will also create other jobs in supporting industries and services.
The metro extension will be executed by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited, a joint venture equally owned by the Government of India and the Gujarat government. Officials say the project will further strengthen urban transport infrastructure in the state.
