Key Background
Tesla India has officially entered Indian electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of its first-ever retail store in the high-end Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) of Mumbai. The store is not only Tesla’s first actual retail store in India but also a strategic entry into one of the world’s fastest-growing automobile industry’s luxury EV space. Store design features massive glass fronts with English and Marathi alphabets, which tells a lot about localizing its appeal.
Two “Tesla Model Y” variations are being offered to Indian buyers at the moment—the ₹61.09 lakh Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and ₹69.15 lakh Long Range RWD, both ex-showroom and way more costly than those in the US because of India’s quasi 100% import levy on fully-assembled cars. Prices on-road in cities such as Mumbai and Delhi will be over ₹70 lakh, well deserving Tesla a place in the luxury EV club.
Tesla initially entered India years back when it began pre-booking the Model 3 online back in 2016. Although, the experience was tainted by delayed delivery and regulatory issues. This is retail-level entry strategy, and Tesla tried testing market demand before spending funds in capital-specific assets such as factories. This policy is also in accordance with the Indian government’s emphasis on local manufacturing, though no such declarations have been issued until now.
Booking will be initiated in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurgaon initially. The buyers will need to pay a non-refundable booking fee of ₹22,200, and subsequently, they will be required to pay an advance amount of ₹3 lakh within seven days. Opening Tesla’s physical retail chain could be only the beginning of putting more money into the Indian market, and potentially in local assembly or manufacturing down the line. With this opening, Tesla is not simply selling cars—Tesla is beating out the rhythm of India’s evolving EV scene.
