Key Background :

In the recently held G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy, the world was dominated by a single symbolic moment—Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted by Mark Carney, who is a former Governor of the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, at the summit center. Carney will hopefully be a future Canadian politician as well as a future candidate to become the next Prime Minister of Canada in the emblem of the Liberal Party.

This high-level summit comes at a time when diplomatic relations between India and Canada have strained almost for a year. Relations heightened tensions after Trudeau officially levelled accusations against India’s role in the murder of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in 2023. India outright denied such accusations and described them as “absurd and motivated.” Thus, bilateral contacts saw a sharp chill, with trade talks freezing and diplomatic staff cuts.

Carney’s trip, unofficial as it was, is full of diplomatic meaning. It’s a warning that Canada may have to re-anchor and stabilize its relations with India, particularly since both countries have mutual strategic interests in trade, education, and security ties. India as guest of honor at the G7 Summit reiterates its growing ever-growing position in the international podium and makes space for multilateral conversation, specifically with Western democracies.

With Carney’s banking background and his new political image, such a warm reception is intelligible as an initial signal of the Liberal Party’s shift of direction in reviving New Delhi links. Since both nations share transnational problems such as global warming and economic security, re-engagement is not only a viable option but unavoidable.
